A worker honey bee produces about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime and to make one pound of honey, a hive's worker bees will fly 55,000 miles and visit two million flowers. In other words, it takes a tremendous amount of worker bees contributing an insane number of hours to create the nutricious and delicious natural sweetner that is honey.
Well, bees work very hard....and so does the beekeeper.
The Twin Oaks honey extraction team gathers approximately 2,000 pounds of raw, natural, gently filtered honey annually from roughly 30 production colonies in Henrco County and North Richmond during a few days in late June. Timing is critical in pulling the honey when it is optimally ripened. The honey is extracted from the honeycomb, then stored, bottled, and sold directly to customers or wholesaled to local retail establishments for resale.
